More Obituaries JOHN HENRY DUCKETT FAIRVIEW John Henry Duckett, 82, of Cane Creek Road, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Cam- pus. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late David John Duckett and Ida MaKnupp Duckett.

per. Duckett was an Army veteran, serving in World War Il as an anti-aircraft gunner in Germany, and he retired from Greyhound Bus Lines with 35 John Duckett ett, years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Reynolds Duckwho passed away in and two sisters, and Mary. He is survived by his Gary Duckett and his wife, Lynn, of Fairview; a granddaughter, Cheryl Whitaker of Fairview; a grandson, Greg Duckett of Hickory; sisters, Elizabeth Sieman of Dade City, and Sarah Clary of Stockbridge, many nieces and nephews. The following eulogy was written by Mr.

Duckett's son, Gary, in loving memory of John H. Duckett Born Died The sudden loss of my dad this week has left all of us who loved him with hearts so heavy that we can barely stand and speak these words, but John Duckett was too great a man to be laid to rest without some recognition of how he lived his life. As a World War Il veteran, he was from that "Great Generation" who believed deeply in meeting your responsibilities without question or complaint. He provided for his family with honest, hard work and never expected or took a handout from anyone. Even when my mother spent the last several years of her life in very poor health, my dad never wavered and was her 24-hour caregiver right up to the end of their 57 years together.

When my mother had passed, my dad again did what needed to be done and made himself a new life filled with a bigger garden and more interaction with his extended family instead of falling into the trap of depression that so many in that situation might have done. John Duckett was very connected to the earth and created remarkable gardens and landscaping every year almost regardless of the weather. He understood how to help things grow and what it took to make them flourish. He had this remarkable understanding of how to pace himself and work sun up to sundown if needed. Having been born in North Carolina and having lived here for his entire 82 years, he gave strong allegiance to all things local and southern.

There was never a more dedicated fan of the University of North Carolina Tar Heel Basketball program. Their 2004-2005 national championship came at a perfect time to give my Dad a boost in the winter that followed my mother's death in July of 2004. It didn't hurt that Carolina's new coach at the time, Roy Williams, is from Asheville. The Atlanta Braves were his spring and summer pastime. Much of his outdoor work would be scheduled according to whether or not they were playing day or night games on that day.

My dad took a very simple and direct approach to life. He never saw the Internet or even truly understood what it was, and he simply had no need for it. Only the technology that had a practical application had any appeal to him. He was very taken with his microwave oven, but I never did get him to change his telephone to touch tone service. If he could not talk to a human, he had no desire to push buttons to get past the computer that had answered the phone.

It just was not his way of doing business and I truly wonder if we would all be better off without some of these things. As I reflect on my father's life, I cannot honestly remember first bad thing he ever did and for the rest of my life. When I have an important decision to make, I will be asking myself what would my dad have done? We are all so very sad that my dad's surgery did not succeed so that we could have had him around for several more years. But we were all so very blessed that we had him for the time that he was here and as his son, I believe that everything that is good and strong within myself is because of John Duckett and what he taught me about life and because he loved me and was my dad. Gary Duckett (April 23, 2006) The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m.
