ELNK dsl cancelled in area - anyone else?

There are no other DSL providers in the area either. Anyone else? Orphaned elnk dsl subscriber support group? On a positive note at least they gave adequate warning. The 2 free months isn't too bad either but still depressing. Dear EarthLink Subscriber, EarthLink works with a number of DSL partners to provide high-speed Internet access to our customers. Your DSL connection is powered by Genuity, one of EarthLink's vendor partners. Unfortunately, Genuity will soon discontinue service in your area. As a result, EarthLink will be unable to support your DSL connection after December 31, 2002. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. To compensate, we are offering you two months of free EarthLink dial-up Internet service. Please call us toll-free at 1-888-829-8466. We'll be happy to set up your complimentary dial-up account. We had hoped to route your connection through a different DSL provider so that your EarthLink DSL service could continue uninterrupted. Unfortunately, we were unable to find another vendor partner in your service area. However, the coverage areas for EarthLink DSL are expanding rapidly, and we'll get in touch with you when your area once again becomes eligible for DSL service. ...blah blah blah (advertising services).

NOW Im ticked, they could have at least stated that in the email. Big difference between Dec 3. and Dec. 31st. Had I not called it would have been even more of a nasty suprise. area is 4790*.

The email said Dec 31 and that's people are going to expect. At least send a updated email stating Dec 3. WTF is going on at ELK?! vent mode == off

Apparently they're doing it slowly across the country... By the way, their statement "...EarthLink will be unable to support your DSL connection after December 31, 2002." is technically correct.

The funny thing is. I just spoke with Earthlink tech support to see if I could be bumped up to 1500/128 plan. The tech told me that I was capped at 768 because Verizion was providing them the service. He said that I could call the install department and see if I could be provisioned through Genuity. I never had the time to sit on the phone for the 30 minutes or so that the recording told me that it would take to speak with someone. So I thought it was strange that I received this just days after having someone at Earthlink tell me that I wasn't going through Genuity. I'm looking at this as a blessing in disguse. I was going to leave Earthlink anyway if they couldn't give me the higher speed (yes, I'm close enough to the CO for the higher speed). So even if they screwed up I will still ask them to discontinue my service. Since I was just billed for a month I will ride out the rest of the current billing cycle. Call the cable company and take advantage of the two free months that they are offering for cable modem service. That should give them plenty of time to release my line and I can then sign up with Verizion at the higher speed that I wanted. Unless I like cable so much that I just stay with them. The only thing I will miss with Earthlink is the news server that they are beta testing. Lots of complete post and fast fast fast. Oh well. After some searching around Verizon is a second DSL provider in the area and it appears that ELK is/was working with Verizon in some capacity. At least they blame the 768/128 cap on Verizon in any case. Somewhat confused as I am obviously going through Genuity. How does Verizon then figure into the equation? Scott - thanks for the assistance, sent details earlier. andreo - Probably switch to cable myself for a short time and keep ELK dialup strictly as email for the time being. It definitely is a confusing situation. Good luck.

Agents in the company recieved response as Earthlink bragged how Verizon is the companies now main DSL provider. So I would love to know how they couldnt bring in DSL for you if this is the case. Please post any updates as they happen.
