Betty Halabisky Obituary - 2021 (2024)

Bessie / Betty Halabisky of Dauphin, MB, formerly of Mink Creek, MB, passed away on December 2, 2021 at the age of 84 years.

Betty Halabisky second oldest daughter of Harry and Lillian Zawasky (Rewniak), was born at home in the RM of Mossey River on October 18, 1937. There she grew up with six other siblings.

When Betty came of school age she had to stay at her grandmother's in Ukraina to attend Ferley School with her older sister. After a short time they both had to return home to walk a distance of three miles to Belle Creek School.

Upon death of her Dad in 1948, the family relocated from the farm to Ukraina, MB to live with their grandparents. Betty continued her education at Ferley School to grade eight.

While going to various dances around Ukraina and Mink Creek, she met an accordion player by the name of Walter Halabisky. Walter lived in the Mink Creek area and was the son of John and Lena Halabisky (Pachkowsky). Walter and Betty were united in marriage on October 26, 1956 in the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ukraina, MB.

Upon marriage to Walter, they ventured out to Sudbury, ON where Walter found employment in the mine. While living there their first son Ronnie was born on October 25, 1957.

In 1958, and after a lot of hard work in the mine, Walter was able to save up enough money to return back to Manitoba where they purchased a homestead in the RM of Mink Creek. In that same year Larry was born on November 9, 1958.

In 1960 their first girl was born, Patricia, May 26, 1960. Farm life kept them busy as well as four more additions to the family, Clarence, born August 12, 1961, Valerie, born August 19, 1964, Terry, born November 9, 1970 and last but quite a few years later Darcy, born September 12, 1979.

Walter and Betty continued to farm and raise their children until they retired and moved to Dauphin, MB in 2013.

Mom/Baba was known for all her hard work on the farm, raising chickens, milking cows, selling cream, and preserving everything from the many huge gardens that she kept. She loved to prepare and serve bountiful meals to all visitors. She took comfort in knowing that no one left hungry. Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren and great grandchildren who will say that Baba made the best perogies and cabbage rolls.

Betty was predeceased by her father Harry; mother Lillian; Terry's twin sister Tammy at birth; granddaughter Tamara Porath; sisters-in-law, Mary Kruk, Annette Morrisette, (Mike's) Jean Halabisky, Emé Halabisky & Shirley Halabisky; brothers-in-law Mike, Pete, Victor, Ed & Nestor Halabisky, Johnny Penner, Louis Dorian, Richard Blaine, Walter Ambrozik, Tony Kruk and Ike Yellowega.
