Kathleen "Kay" Medwid Obituary | December 13, 2022 | Dauphin, MB (2024)

Kathleen (Kay) Medwid of Dauphin, formerly of Rural Ethelbert MB, passed away peacefully with family by her side, into the arms of Jesus, on December 13th, 2022 at Dauphin Regional Health Centre.

Kathleen Elizabeth Medwid (Morgan) was born December 20, 1933 in Gilbert Plains to Gordon and Dora Morgan. She was one of four children: Lloyd, Kathleen, Doreen, and Gloria.

Kathleen lived the first five years of life in the little log homestead of John and Sophia Price in the Plainview district northwest of Gilbert Plains, then moved to the southeast of town. Kay and her siblings attended Tanner School, Gilbert Plains School, and Brickburn Consolidated School. In 1951/52, Kay taught on permit at Bohdan School and in 1953 moved on to train as a Certified Nursing Aide at The School of Nursing Aides in Calgary. After graduation, she worked at hospitals in Alberta and then returned to the area to work at the Dauphin General Hospital.

Kathleen found her lifelong soul mate Sylvester Medwid and they wed on July 27, 1954. She was deeply devoted to Sylvester through good times and the challenging times that life on a farm often presented. She admired his ambition, many abilities, but it was his music that gave her much joy. They lived on the Medwid family farm, except for a short stint in Toronto for the year 1956 into the spring of 1957, until retiring to the village of Ethelbert in 1994. While in Toronto, Kay extended her knowledge of Syl’s family’s Ukrainian culture, by learning and mastering the language. Kay took great pleasure working and living in harmony with her husband committed to maintaining the ways of rural life. She wholeheartedly embraced the vocation of homemaker and with deep devotion and love, raised her dear family. Kay felt blessed and privileged to serve her family as a homemaker. She took care in making every meal, making sure there was more than enough as it was always important to have an open door for anyone that might just pop in. Homemade bread wafted from the farm kitchen as we came home from school. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and making quilts and afghans for her family. She thrived on growing an amazing garden and time and time again had the satisfaction of filling the storage room and large freezer with the bounty of her garden at harvest time. She shared the love of her beautiful flower garden with her loved ones. Kay inspired her family with countless stories of the history of our family ancestry. More importantly, it was a priority for her to plant the seeds of faith in her children and grandchildren. She was always up for an engaging conversation with anyone she would encounter. As the years went by and distance prevailed, she cherished the countless conversations with her sisters and brother over the phone. Extended family and dear friends were precious to Kay. She was so grateful for the time she was able to have with her Mountainview Villa friends.

Kathleen was predeceased by her first born daughter, parents Gordon & Dora Morgan, her mother-in-law and father-in-law Fred & Mary Medwid, and her granddaughter Amanda Medwid.

Kathleen will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Sylvester Medwid; children, Ron (Gladys) Medwid, Ken (Heather) Medwid, Dennis (Glenda) Medwid, and Carla (Michael) Newransky; grandchildren, Diana (Nick), Darryl (Katelynn), Bryan (Christina), Holly (Michael), Julie (Jason), Stacey, Mark (Lindsay), Jocelyn (Chris), Megan (Jordan), Joshua (Sophie); and 13 great-grandchildren, Kacey & Brooke, Ava & Chloe, Ethan & Jace, George, Clara, Maisie & Scarlett, Theo, Callum & Baby Kamerman.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the medical staff at Dauphin Hospital for the compassionate care for our dear Kathleen. Special thanks to Dr Kish and Dr Mathison. Thanks to Rev. Father Brent Kuzyk for his guidance and care.
