Last week our industry lost one of our giants, our team lost a great leader, and I lost a friend. To me, Tony was always the eddy in a business that can sometimes feel like you are paddling through Class V rapids. He created a place of calm where you could discuss business, talk about family or just laugh. I cannot remember a conversation with Tony that did not include laughter. He will be forever missed.https://lnkd.in/egs5eEvF

Martin, Thank you for sharing. Tony was one of kind and will be missed. His ability to have a semi serious conversation then fill it with laughter was contagious. A wonderful person indeed.

This 2MMM is a President’s Day message about how we have an opportunity to lead (still) by how we live our life. 2MMM: What will be said at YOUR Funeral? For this President’s Day, I was reflecting on impact and legacy.I want you to imagine YOU died. It’s now YOUR funeral.Picture it. The people you know sitting to hear those closest talk about your life. What will those coming up say about YOU?What was YOUR Impact, Your Legacy, and how you Lived your LIfe?We do it for Presidents. Let’s do it for ourselves now.Listen as I talk about these three areas. Then I have a challenge for you that may change how you go about your life this week, and maybe just maybe, for much longer. So that how you live is also how you want to be remembered. And I’ll see YOU at the next 2MMM!https://lnkd.in/gfPtDq_7

Last week, I finally connected with a member of an amazing 2G family business I had been pursuing for years. Things seemed promising—until I found his obituary in the paper this morning. In our line of work, we often facilitate a client’s final testament—capturing a lifetime of experiences, achievements, values, and expressions of gratitude. So, for us, "losing a client" carries a deeper meaning than "they’re taking their business elsewhere."To underscore the finality of our work, I designated one wall at Müllerhaus Legacy for a beautiful in memoriam gallery, honoring clients we’ve lost over the years. This wall serves as a daily reminder of the enduring value our work provides to the families, communities, and descendants impacted by our clients and their accomplishments. While it is always saddening to lose a client, the knowledge that we played a role in preserving their legacy gives us a sense of confident satisfaction. These sentiments are reinforced by the kind words we often receive from grateful family members. However, this morning I felt a unique sadness in losing a POTENTIAL client, never having had the chance to help them develop and pass down the legacy of such a remarkable family and business.Reading the obituary was strange. Although I have yet to meet a member of the family, I feel deeply invested in their story. I recognized all the names—parents, grandparents, siblings and children. I knew about his accomplishments, philanthropy, and interests. I suspect I even know things about their family history they do not.Over the years, I attempted a few direct outreaches with no response—not uncommon for HNW families. Finally, I secured a personal introduction through one of our other clients who played a round of golf with this family member.I called, followed up with an email, and received a response stating he had several things going on but would get back to me soon. I sent him a nice response letting him know what to expect as a follow up. He died the next day. Coming up short on "closing a deal" feels different when legacy is on the line. I constantly question my sales ability. Am I making the right contact, following up adequately, avoiding becoming a pest, effectively communicating, and explaining the value? In this case, did I simply wait too long?#familybusiness #familyhistory #familyoffice #wealthmanagement
