A A Business Gambles on Solution Reconversion Problems The following review of prevailing U.S. business conditions was written by John F. Chester, Associated Press business editor, during the stop made in Minneapolis Saturday by 18 newspapermen who are touring 21 major cities to study reconversion problems.) At least 32 of the top to gamble billions that the straightened out satisfactorily. That may sound like a however, it is one of the direct by 18 newspaper correspondents who have traveled 5,500 miles in the last 12 days in a survey of postwar business problems. BUSINESS IS BOOMING The word "gamble" actually was used by Paul Davies, president of the Food Machinery Co.

at San Jose, Calif. What he and the othor executives meant was they were going ahead full blast on business expansion plans despite national concertainties. The flying reporters saw businesses that were boomIng and planning to boom still more in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, California and Minnesota. Few of the plants visited had any major reconversion problems. But there were plenty of other businesses in these states that were reconverting and apparently reconverting fast.

Two other points ran straight through almost all our interviews. They were: That more help is needed and 1 right now help can't be found. One man said labor was taking a "vacation." 2. the That demands industry is of going labor to for fight 52 OBITUARIES AND FUNERALS Death notices or memorial services containing stars denote those who have died while in the service of our country. Grace Moore Dazzles MUSIC Listeners With Songs By NORMAN C. HOUK Concert artists appearing In Minneapolis later in the season may face the mischance of trying to draw an audience on a night of subzero wind and whirl-' ing snow. Grace Moore, Metropolitan Opera soprano, however, faced a worse obstacle Sunday afternoon--one of those golden sunny autumn Sunday afternoons, each one of which we know and fear may be the last. So when something more than 3,000 filed out of the sun into Minneapolis municipal auditorium Sunday afternoon for the first concert of Mrs. Carlyle Scott's series it really was a considerable personal triumph for Miss Moore.

And she made it a bright afternoon, too. Dazzling blond as always, she wore a dramatic green gown which sported sO many sequins it dimmed the little row of decorations from European royalty she habitually wears. Three Shakespeare songs opened her program, "Orpheus With His Lute" from "Henry VIII," "Come Away, Death," from "Twelfth Night," and "Come Buy," from "A Winter's Tale," the last a Buzzi-Peccia setting, lively and engaging. Of Miss Moore's second group sung in French, Dupare's "Phidyle" and Paulin's "Que Deviennent les Roses," an excellent song, bid for top place until she Interpolated a song omitted accidentally in transmitting the I BUSINESS SERVICE Awnings, Blinds Shades APEX SHADES AND EST QUALITIES. It was "Tristesse Eternelle," words by Suzanne d'Olivera Jackowska set to Chopin prelude. While the tendency is to resent providing abstract music with lyrics, in this case it was a highly acceptable success. Miss Moore does the French songs well, with a cool voice and intelligent interpretation. Her first encore was Mimi's aria from the first act of "La Boheme," and to it she brought the finest singing of the afternoon. In the aria, as well as all her other numbers, Moore had the very valuable assistance Miss, of Alexander Aster at the piano.

He is one of the directors of the Chicago Opera company and he made a last hour plane dash from Chicago to accompany Miss Moore when the scheduled pianist was taken ill. The sound artistry of his sensitive support must have been as much of A joy to Miss Moore as it was to those in audience to pay attention to the accompanist's important pace in the proceedings. Miss Moore sang a group of lighter songs before starting on songs requested from the audience. A bit of byplay when a leg of grand piano went through the platform floor early in the concert (nothing serious) established informal relations with the happy audience, and as Miss Moore loves her audience, this business of singing requests can go on longer than I could spare the time to enjoy it.
